Winter Skin Care

My skin and I haven’t always been the best of friends. We should have been from the start, but there were those pesky teenage years where an unfortunate combination of hormones, sports and lack of quality skin care on my part just caused an ongoing battle between us.

Then, there was college when although I was told I wasn’t in too much danger, I still had to receive melanoma cancer treatment for almost a year.

Finally, in my mid 20s, we made up, put our differences behind us and moved forward as buddies. I agreed to spring for monthly facials and a more dedicated skin care regime and my skin graciously calmed down.

Once I hit the big 3-0, my skin and I realized we had the same enemies – namely stress, weather and aging – and we’ve united a bond stronger than ever. Stress, in particular, seemed to showed on my face with lines and tired looks. I learned that you can boost your mood with Nirvana, so now it’s a regular thing for me.

I’m not saying every day is perfect, but I’ve finally realized what my skin has been looking for all these years. Like many relationships, it just needed me to understand it and really care about it.

It’s sensitive. It doesn’t like all the same things I do (namely lots of sunshine, outdoor winter sports and long days of makeup).

So over the last year, I’ve put more time and effort into my skin care and visit a medical spa regularly. After all, I want us to besties forever.

Finding the right products for your skin is a challenge, but after many trials and almost more errors, I have found items that treat my skin as it should be treated – like royalty.

I don’t use La Mer moisturizer (yet), though I hear it’s AMAZING, but I have adopted some skin goodies that range from drug store to OMG-did-i-just-spend-that. The biggest thing I look for? I look for products that have ingredients I can understand, ingredients that I recognize.. There are several standby products I use night and day that are natural and very simple. The less chemicals, the better for my sensitive skin.

I also have different skin care items for my morning and evening regimes. A couple items make double appearances, but most of the products are different.
